A smart ring, rethought.
PettersonApps redesigned and rebuilt Inspiring, a wellness app paired with Norway’s first smart ring. We fixed poor usability and fragmented data with a full UX/UI redesign, new readiness and sleep logic, and a scalable design system — delivered on iOS and Android between 2023 and 2025.

Who we built it for.
Inspiring is a Norwegian health-tech brand behind the country’s first smart ring. Their wearable tracks sleep, stress, heart rate and activity; the companion app is how users make sense of that data every day.
They came to PettersonApps to modernize an existing app that users found hard to use.

We built Inspiring®, a companion app ecosystem for a Bluetooth smart ring that turns continuous sensor data into daily health insights. Users pair the ring, sync live and historical metrics, and review sleep, activity, readiness, stress and optional ECG in one app. One codebase serves multiple OEM white-label brands. The work covered:
- native iOS (Swift, Objective-C) and Android (Kotlin) apps, plus an Android SDK for the ring protocols and on-device algorithms
- the backend
- Bluetooth pairing, background sync and OTA firmware updates
- sleep analysis, readiness score, workout tracking with GPS, and ECG with PDF export
- integrations with Apple Health, Health Connect and Google Fit
We delivered native iOS and Android apps, plus an Android SDK for the ring protocols and on-device algorithms. The iOS app was built with Swift and Objective-C and the Android app with Kotlin.
We worked with an existing codebase. The native iOS (Objective-C) and Android (Kotlin/Java) apps were built on an existing ring SDK and code and included legacy logic from previous developers.
We worked on top of the ring manufacturer’s BLE SDK and reworked the connection logic around it. On Android, we added a persistent background service with automatic reconnect attempts and background scanning, so the ring reconnects even when the app is closed. We also rebuilt the connection flow for Android 15, removing a slow cache-based step that caused 30-40 second delays. On iOS, we replaced the legacy single-observer BLE callbacks with a multi-delegate approach, so different parts of the app reliably receive ring status and data. We also investigated cases where the ring appeared connected but no data arrived, together with the manufacturer, and resolved them in the app.
Yes. On iOS it uses HealthKit, and on Android it uses Health Connect.
Yes. PettersonApps’ project manager coordinated software and ring-hardware teams across different time zones, and we handled OTA firmware updates and firmware error logging.
